DICOM File Security and HIPAA Compliancy

VSTAR is comprised of two separate redundant file server locations, one located in Tampa Bay, Florida and the other in Denver, Colorado. Programmed to automatically store and synchronize data to our servers, our nationwide network ensures your data is available even in the event of a catastrophic Internet failure. Powered by UNIX based G5 XServers, and clustered using Xgrid, our system is one of the most powerful and secure file storage arrays in the marketplace.

As part of your package, MIS Solutions provides your facility with a state-of-the-art VPN Router that allows 70 VPN tunnels and 10 Simultaneous PPTP connections for your staff, radiologists and other centers to connect to you securely and within HIPPA law, without investing in expensive hardware or a PACS server.

HIPAA Compliancy

HIPAAVSTAR employs military grade security protocols within its storage and retrieval system. These protocols meet existing laws and regulations regarding patient record confidentiality as currently being established by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and as mandated by the federal Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Security of the network, storage facility, communications, and storage access is addressed in several layers including firewalls, filtering, digital signatures, encryption, and access control technologies.

Benefits

* Fully automated data backups at secure off-site facilities.
* Fully HIPAA Compliant connections and backup, giving you peace of mind
.
* No media to buy, rotate, catalog or store offsite.
* Data can be easily restored on-demand 24x7.
* Service costs are much lower compared to external media and storage costs.

How it Works

Easy Setup

After performing a survey of your network and operations, our technicians will come to your location and install our proprietary network technology that includes a VPN router that can support up to 70 VPN and 10 PPTP connections simultaneously, giving your organization the ability send your DICOM images securely to dozens of different radiologists, doctors or other centers anywhere via the Internet.

We also co-ordinate and help your medical staff / off site Radiologists configure their remote locations to access your new, HIPAA compliant network.

Using DICOM viewing software like the popular RA 600 Centricity™ by GE Healthcare, you can simply send the DICOM image to a Destination through a VPN tunnel, programmed by our support staff remotely with a simple phone call to our help desk.

DICOM Transmission and Archiving

VSTAR uses an Enterprise Level solution to automatically download your DICOM files from your site during off-peak hours. Our package includes a small footprint UNIX mini-PACS server that will act as a 'traffic director' for your DICOM file backups. While your network is idle, VSTAR automatically copies your files to the UNIX Server's 350GB buffer for upload to the MISS network. Your files are then uploaded during the night, backed up and distributed to two separate off-site storage facilities for extra security and HIPAA compliance.

3D Imaging at your fingertips

Once your account is activated, you can use your new Macintosh XGrid Computer loaded with our revolutionary 3D rendering software and DICOM database manager to link to your local and remote network over your existing LAN and Broadband Internet Connection.

Our system fully supports software commonly used by MRI imaging centers and radiologists nationwide. By simply adding our server IP and AE Title to your existing viewer, you can access your archived files easily any time you need to. Internet Browser based retrieval is also available for DICOM file downloading and viewing from anywhere in the world.

FAQ

What is a VPN tunnel?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Networking. A VPN Tunnel is an encrypted network connection to another network over the Internet. When a DICOM is sent from your PACS or workstation over the Internet to a Radiologist or Doctor's office, it is NOT HIPPA COMPLIANT unless it is over a secure connection such as a VPN (Centricity™ users, see HIPAA statement here).

What is PPTP?

PPTP stands for Point to Point Tunneling Protocol. VPN's use authenticated links to make sure that only authorized users can connect to your network, and they use encryption to make sure that others cannot intercept and cannot use data that travels over the Internet. Windows XP achieves this security by using Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) or Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP). A Tunneling Protocol is a technology that helps make the transfer of information over the Internet more secure from one computer to another.
